Susan is managing partner and head of our award-winning private client team and has over 18 years’ experience in private client work.
Susan is recognised by Chambers and Partners HNW legal directory as one of the leading private client lawyers in the region. Advising on all aspects of Wills, probate, tax planning and estate administration, she specialises in complex and high value estates and has a loyal following of high net worth clients in Hertfordshire and London.
The combination of Susan’s outgoing personality, natural warmth and exceptional legal expertise means that she is always very much in demand.
Susan’s client base includes a variety of private clients and a number of high net worth clients based both locally in Hertfordshire and in London.
Her experience within the trusts and estates field ranges from ‘probate only’ applications for small estates right through to estates of varying degrees of complexity including those in excess of £5million.
She has experience of drafting lifetime trusts including family settlements, interest in possession trusts and discretionary trusts.
Susan’s experience also includes the fields of enduring powers of attorney, care of the elderly, nursing home fees, registration of enduring powers of attorney, lasting powers of attorney and deputyship work.
She is regularly appointed by her clients to act as their executor, trustee and attorney. She also regularly gives seminars to clients and referrers on Wills, tax planning and elderly client matters.
Susan is also a member of our healthcare sector group. She regularly provides training to care homes on Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, Court of Protection, care fees and estate administration for their staff, residents and families.
Susan studied Law at the University of Hertfordshire and completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in Chester. She completed her training contract with Debenhams Ottaway Solicitors in 2000. She became partner in 2005 and managing partner in 2018.
Susan has recently been included in both the ‘Lawyers Beyond London’ section of the 2021 edition of the Spear’s 500. Susan has also featured in the Spear’s 500 index as one of the top private wealth lawyers based outside of London.
She has developed a very strong presence and reputation in London and is a member of the Citywealth Powerwomen Club.
Susan is also a member of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and the Private Client Section of the Law Society.
Susan won the Business Leader of the year category at the St Albans Chamber of Commerce Business Community awards in 2020.
