One of our international clients, who has an estate worth £10m, needed help preparing a Will dealing with her UK estate. She also needed advice on her permanent place of residence (domicile) after emigrating to the US. A person’s domicile is important because it relates to inheritance tax and how this is dealt with.

Our client is originally from the UK, where she still has property and cash, but she emigrated to the US after her marriage to a US citizen.

We considered the client’s circumstances in light of the UK/US tax treaty, an agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom that governs how taxes are imposed in both countries. We advised her on the UK inheritance tax rules that apply. We then prepared a Will dealing with her UK estate that was success fully completed in consultation with her US lawyers.
