Debenhams Ottaway is a great place to start your career in law. Our long-running training contracts have been very successful, proven by the number of trainees we have retained upon qualification and progressed up to Partner level.

We recruit trainees annually – the number of trainees and timings are based on the needs of the business to ensure that trainees have a high quality training and experience during this period.

We are looking for driven and committed individuals, so previous legal experience is essential. Although we welcome external applications from talented individuals, we prioritise internal applications so would encourage applicants to consider our legal support and paralegal vacancies in addition to applying for a training contract.

What are we looking for in our trainees?

We are looking for individuals with the enthusiasm, imagination and drive to succeed. We like candidates to demonstrate a commitment to client service and a career in the law. We are a forward thinking firm and seek candidates who are commercially aware and think outside the box. We encourage our trainees to get involved at all levels. Recent activities include organising social events and getting involved in firm wide marketing initiatives. You do not have to have studied law to join us, however, you must have successfully completed the LPC at the start of the training contract.

 What should I expect as a trainee?

Debenhams Ottaway provides first class training which involves high levels of supervision and client contact. Each trainee is assigned a supervisor who will allocate work and ensure each trainee receives regular feedback and support throughout their seat. Our training contracts offer trainees experience in a wide range of practice areas including our core areas of Dispute Resolution, Property and Private Client. This enables each trainee to gain sufficient knowledge and experience in a range of different areas, before deciding which area of law they would like to pursue.

What if a training contract is not right for me at this time?

If the training contract isn’t right for you, we have other roles to help you get your career in law off to a flying start. This can range from paralegal/legal assistants to business or legal support. We run an apprenticeship programme through CiLEX in Legal Administration. These are great opportunities for anyone looking for alternative routes into law that are less formal than the training contract process.
